Scott Howitt:

Yeah, I think the old days — where we had pretty static environments, and we also had a situation where the threat actors weren't coming at us on a continuous basis — it was okay to get away with quarterly testing and checking the box for the clients. But now, with the way your network is organic, it doesn't look like it did yesterday. It's always changing. And with threat actors adopting AI-dependent attacks on your network, you need to constantly be going after your own network and discovering the weaknesses in it before your threat actors do.

Point-in-time testing tells me what happened yesterday. Usually, by the time you get the results, I've already changed everything in that landscape. So with continuous pen testing, what I get to see — as my network changes organically, with all my microservice architectures and all the new AI agents popping up — is how it looks in the moment. Having a view of what's going on in my network at all times, the changes that are being made, and making sure I'm protecting against those changes, is really important to my go-forward position on defense.

The business outcome that matters the most, all the time, is that my network stays up. So resilience — reliability, stability — is the most important thing you can deliver back to your business to show value in the CISO organization. Ensuring that you have the most defensible network possible is really going to add value to the business. It's something you can measure and show your business.
